A Great Cup of Coffee: Pittsburgh Current + KRNLS

For $100 any business less than a year old can get a 1/8th-page ad that will run one time in our new-business advertising section. This allows new businesses to try out our services and get their name out there for a low price.
— Charlie Deitch, Publisher, Pittsburgh Current

A couple of months ago, KRNLS cofounder Scot MacTaggart sat down with the publishers of the Pittsburgh Current - a relatively new alt-weekly paper run by Charlie Deitch and Bethany Ruhe - at the Muddy Cup coffee shop in Beechview. The Current sprang to life through a successful Kickstarter campaign that they ran by themselves, and since KRNLS is known for crowdfunding, Scot decided to ask his new friends how things had gone and what they had learned from the experience.

After about 90 minutes of NOT talking about the Kickstarter, the Grassroots Advertising Program was born. It’s a low-cost way for a new business to get the word out, because an alt-weekly like the Current is exactly where readers would turn to find out about the newest in new, which is a very powerful placement for any company trying to find acceptance.

There’s an article all about that fateful cup of coffee over at the Pittsburgh Current’s website. Thanks to Charlie and Bethany for giving us credit for our suggestion. If you know the owners of businesses younger than one year old, let them know that they qualify for this pricing!
