Optimizing Sales: Pittsburgh Current, the New Alt-Kings

If - guns to our heads - we had to set aside all our bitterness and jealousy to recognize another local team for their skill in running a crowdfunding campaign, it would be our friends Charlie Deitch and Bethany Ruhe at the Pittsburgh Current.

About a year ago, the Current team left the Pittsburgh City Paper and assembled a really strong Kickstarter campaign, with a strategy of building from the ground up, and attracting advertisers by focusing on content and talent. We supported their campaign as basic-ass backers. It was a weird feeling.

According to the audit, 52,139 of the Current’s print readers are between the ages of 18-24, better than any other print or online publication. In other key categories, 18-34, 21-34 and other similar categories, the Current trails only the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Last week, thanks to an independent survey performed by The Media Audit, they were able to prove that audiences are responding. And advertisers are following them.

This is a great problem to have, of course. Like many young businesses and startups though, the Current was caught a bit off guard by the sudden rush of interest, and called KRNLS for some operational support.

We really can’t talk about the exact plan we developed - the media game is competitive, after all - but messaging, internal communications, and workflow efficiency are key elements, and we were able to add a couple of part-time reps to the team to assist with workload. Sales are up, new accounts are up, and everyone can see that the Current is going places.

Contact us if you’d like to talk to one of our reps about advertising with the Pittsburgh Current, or if you want to know if we can do something similar for your team.
